Q

I am getting ready to make my new year’s resolutions for 2012. I have a personal goal of becoming fit in 2012. I have made this resolution many times in the past, but it never seems to work out (no pun intended) for me. I get hurt and then I am not motivated. What should I do to not get hurt?

A

You are not alone the New Year's Resolution department. Pain is an indicator that something is wrong and actually can be a contraindication to exercise. A thorough evaluation should be conducted. An exercise program designed for fitness assumes that the body that is doing the exercises is at its optimal status. In other words, it moves freely, without restriction. Then and only then is strengthening warranted. If parts do not move freely, the body will compensate. The part that compensates typically gets injured because it is overworking. A physical therapist can be part of your New Year's Resolution team so you can achieve your fitness goals. The therapists at Corvallis Sport and Spine Physical Therapy have been changing people's lives for the past 7 years and we look forward to what 2012 will bring you. Happy New Year!
